Install

Add this to your client's MCP configuration (Claude Desktop: claude_desktop_config.json; Cursor: .cursor/mcp.json; VS Code and others use the same "mcpServers" shape).

NPM package @athenode/cli
Claude Code
claude mcp add athenode -e 'ATHENODE_PROJECT_DIR=<ATHENODE_PROJECT_DIR>' -e 'ATHENODE_TOKEN=<your athenode_token>' -- npx -y @athenode/cli@0.10.7 mcp
JSON configuration (Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code)
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "athenode": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "-y",
                "@athenode/cli@0.10.7",
                "mcp"
            ],
            "env": {
                "ATHENODE_PROJECT_DIR": "<ATHENODE_PROJECT_DIR>",
                "ATHENODE_TOKEN": "<your athenode_token>"
            }
        }
    }
}

Environment variables

  • ATHENODE_PROJECT_DIR Project root holding .athenode/config.json (run `npx @athenode/cli init` there first). Defaults to the working directory or the client's first root.
  • ATHENODE_TOKEN secret Project token; overrides the one stored by `athenode init`.

Frequently asked questions

What is Athenode?

Spec-driven development for AI coding agents: specs, skills, agents, rules and MCP servers.

How do I install Athenode?

It runs on your machine. In Claude Code: claude mcp add athenode -e 'ATHENODE_PROJECT_DIR=<ATHENODE_PROJECT_DIR>' -e 'ATHENODE_TOKEN=<your athenode_token>' -- npx -y @athenode/cli@0.10.7 mcp. For other clients, paste the JSON configuration from this page into their MCP settings.

Does Athenode need an API key?

Yes. It expects ATHENODE_TOKEN, which you set in its configuration.

Who maintains Athenode?

It is published by com.athenode. AI.tn lists it but does not maintain or endorse it.

From the official MCP Registry. Listing is not an endorsement: review a server's code and permissions before giving it access to your data.
